There is a thesis about short range underwater optical link based on Ronja

It´s an interesting idea and experiment. Just his receiver PCB/mechanical design apparently opens way to a lot of crosstalk between the individual RX stages
and he describes problems with sensitivity and signal integrity. He says he uses a NTE 415 dual gate MOSFET for which I was unable to find a datasheet online.
