They seem to have a half-life of around 1000 hours if used at full power. that only means, after 1000 hours you get half amount of light power with same electrical power input.
This is why all the laser circuits have automatic power adjustment. 
Also this means, after a certain amount of electrical power it will get damaged because of excess heat.
Also lasers have the nice attitude of immediate damage, when the _optical_ power ecxeeds the limit.
A monitor diode with APC is a _must_.
So messing around with the LDs is fun, but also a very expensive hobby if not done carefully.
Care must be taken ragarding health of eyes and the LD-s.

DVD burner hardly operates 24/7...
Does anybody know how long can DVD laser shine continuously (providing 
proper biasing and cooling)
