Unfortunately, buying a DVD burner is much cheaper than the diode alone.
At least for some laser types, drive manufactures buy all they can to
build into drives. This leads to more expensive diodes for everyone
else. It's all about money, not ecology. However, one should already be
able to get disposed DVD burners these days.
